ivii.assist at BFI Leoben

The shortage of skilled workers is apparent in almost every company. It’s a problem that is growing rapidly, particularly on the back of the automation and digitization of our working lives. Insufficient basic education, outdated knowledge and lack of time for further education all contribute to one major challenge for companies looking to fill vacancies. Thanks to our smart glasses ivii.assist, however, networked learning in the digitized world is now a reality.

The BFI education centre in Leoben is utilizing the latest technology in their further education programmes for electrical engineering. Our smart glasses ivii.assist now feature in the apprenticeship training programme for mechatronics and mechanical engineering.

Overcoming the shortage of skilled workers

Skilled workers can be trained quickly and easily using ivii.assist as part of a guided induction. Learning by doing is the motto when it comes to training workers using the smart glasses, which saves a great deal of time. Theory and practice are combined and together result in a well-rounded learning experience.

Mr Nimmrichter, you’re a trainer at BFI Leoben and teach all the different fields encompassed in electrical engineering. How did you first find out about the smart glasses?

C. Nimmrichter: The ivii.assist was featured at an event where it was being presented to schools and training centres. That was when I first heard about the smart glasses and I knew right away that I could integrate them into the electrical engineering teaching programme. The rest went pretty quickly! I took what I had learned in a brief introductory training session at the ivii site at the KNAPP Campus in Dobl back with me to Leoben so that we too could start using the smart glasses. Despite some initial minor difficulties with the software, which were solved almost immediately, we were then all set to integrate the ivii.assist in the learning process.

What are the benefits of using the smart glasses in your teaching programmes?

C. Nimmrichter: Using ivii.assist means we are working with the latest maintenance technologies available on the market as part of our courses. The apprentices learn to be independent and to work with systems in a wide range of disciplines, as well as how remote maintenance works. Our apprentices like receiving instructions via the smart glasses as it means they can completely focus on the task at hand.

The use case: Which areas is the ivii.assist being used in?

  • First and foremost in maintenance process installation. This means that our trainee automation engineers,
  • mechatronics technicians
  • and our electrical engineers all use them
  • Another target group is servicing and maintenance employees who receive instructions for the next documentation step from ivii.assist.

Sascha, a mechatronics apprentice finds the system really cool as it means he can work together with a fellow apprentice on the same service case. What do you like most about it?

Sascha: It’s so cool and I reckon it will be used in companies in the future,” he told us excitedly. “The smart glasses display the plans, which means both your hands are free for work. If I didn’t have the smart glasses, I’d have to print out the plans and bring them with me. I also like that I don’t have to learn anything off by heart. The glasses help me whenever I need.

Thanks to ivii.assist, BFI has taken a significant step closer to the digitized working world. How will smart glasses be used in the future?

C. Nimmrichter: Using smart glasses is particularly interesting when it comes to senior students and specialist workers. They already have the basic knowledge and can therefore use the glasses to gain complementary practical experience. From 2020 onwards, we will be offering our own BFI course called “Digital maintenance – maintenance glasses” with the ivii.assist as part of the new product catalogue.

The ivii.assist smart glasses are also used for guided system startups. Please find more information on the ivii.assist product here.

Our mastermind – ivii.smartinspector

A photographic memory literally has our newest product: ivii.smartinspector. This intelligent solution detects any remaining articles or dirt in containers. To do so, ivii.smartinspector uses top-notch image recognition and processing technology.  Christian Zink, our Product Manager,  gives an insight into the areas of application and advantages of the ivii.smartinspector.

ivii.smartinspector

Where do you implement such a solution and what are
the advantages?

With ivii.smartinspector dirt or left-over articles can be detected in containers. Our ivii.smartinspector is a classic solution for the goodsin procedures to ensure efficient and high-quality goods-in processes. A camera system with intelligent software is installed above the conveyor system: each container is photographed from above and the actual image is compared to the expected image in the database. In doing so, empty storage containers can be checked automatically without stopping the container flow before they are filled with new goods again.

One advantage of the ivii.smartinspector is that it can be adapted flexibly to its environment such as the customer’s conveyor system. Thanks to a PLC interface, the ivii.smartinspector can be integrated into existing systems. The system is easy to install and also low-maintenance during ongoing operation. All in all, this is a plug & play solution that boosts quality.

What are the scopes of application in the fashion and retail sectors?

High quality and speed in processing customer orders are crucial in the retail and fashion sectors, especially in online commerce where goods are shipped directly to the end consumer. Dirt, a stain or adhesive residue on an article that the customer can’t wait to receive can ruin the shopping experience. This is where the ivii.smartinspector helps to ensure the best possible quality without compromising efficiency. We are currently implementing this concept for a large online retailer in Germany.

Our motto is passion for
simplicity. What drives us is
the passion to make the life
of our customers simpler.

Hello Smart Production

The requirements placed on production today are immense. Costs should be cut, but not at the expense of productivity, which should be increased. At the same time, quality should be guaranteed to 100 %. Smart production is becoming more and more realistic and is one of the future trends in the development of the global economy. The relationship between workers, machines and services is becoming increasingly intense.

But the interconnection of the production environments is not the only thing we’re witnessing – the production lifecycles are also getting shorter and shorter. In some sectors, as well as the automobile industry, we have pretty much reached single-item lots. We as customers expect to receive individual products at mass-good prices and are almost never willing to pay more for personalized articles. This has a huge impact on production workers – every product changes every single day, with zero error tolerance.

But when is production truly smart?

Is there more to this catchphrase than just a marketing slogan? Here at ivii, we believe that production is smart when it can respond flexibly to customers’ wishes, when the worker is the main focus of the process and when technologies are used to bring knowledge into companies.

The employee must receive the right information at the right time, in the right location, quality and quantity. They must be able to see themselves as part of the bigger picture and see the consequences of their actions.

In this case, the ivii solutions indicate which components need to be installed while also guaranteeing that they are installed correctly. This again assures the employee that they are carrying out their work without any errors, meaning they don’t have to waste time rectifying mistakes and they can fully concentrate on the task at hand.

This ivii solution has been implemented at Pankl Racing Systems AG.

Smart production at Pankl

Pankl requires 100 % quality checking within the assembly process.
Pankl Racing Systems AG, which is headquartered in Kapfenberg, Austria, opted for an intelligent image processing solution integrated in the quality assurance process. And now they’re ready for the future.

Pankl High Performance Systems is a new division of Pankl Racing AG and produces high-quality drivetrains for motorcycle racing.
In 2016, a state-of-the-art production facility was built in Kapfenberg to manufacture the high-performance KTM drivetrains.

The prerequisite: A drivetrain every three minutes

Drivetrains are components of KTM motorcycles that contribute to both performance and quality. The solution had to guarantee maximum quality and end-to-end traceability.

The solution: ivii.smartdesk

Pankl chose the intelligent assistance system ivii.smartdesk to achieve its ambitious goals. The solution enables a 100 % quality check to take place during the assembly process. The image recognition and image processing system of the ivii.smartdesk records every component used during assembly. The check is started at the press of a single button. Thanks to a real-time feedback system, personnel receive an immediate evaluation of the quality of the step taken. As a result, a zero-error strategy is in place to ensure accurate production. The production facilities at Pankl were equipped with four ivii.smartdesk solutions.

Red means: Error. The possible error is displayed on the monitor and can be rectified immediately.

The worker is always the focus

We support employees as part of smart production in their day-to-day work.

Our solution assures them that they have carried out each of their work steps correctly. The ivii.smartdesk does not require employees to complete any training, which makes it easy to integrate in the existing work process. This again assures the employee that they are carrying out their work without any errors, meaning they don’t have to waste time rectifying mistakes and they can fully concentrate on the task at hand. We make sure to always focus on the worker.

Machines in factories can suddenly fail and a system can unexpectedly come to a standstill; the customer, however, still expects to receive their goods on time. The problem needs to be rectified as quickly as possible – there’s no time to lose.
To prevent the service technician losing any time on site, they use our ivii.assist head-mounted display to speak to an expert who knows what needs to be done to rectify the particular issue. Uncomplicated and clear communication is critical to detecting the error as quickly as possible and then rectifying it to the appropriate quality.
Immerse yourself in our smart factory in which the human workforce, machines and resources communicate with each other as easily as in a social network.

A picture paints a thousand words.

As we all know, people communicate much more effectively using pictures and videos. With the help of the integrated video communication platform, people from all around the world can connect to one another to resolve issues.

How our solution works
The service technician on site communicates with the expert during troubleshooting via the integrated video communication platform. He sends the expert a snapshot of the incident with just one click. The expert knows right away what needs to be done and guides the technician through the entire process. At the same time, the ivii.software checks whether each of the individual work steps is carried out correctly or not. The ensures that 100 % quality checks are conducted within the troubleshooting process.
Experts and service technicians around the globe are connected to one another and can rectify issues together, both quickly and in the right quality

This video shows a service call-out in the logistics sector. A defect camera in a system is repaired quickly and in the right quality thanks to our solution.
